Ukuphahla - A typical 'How To' guide
After receiving a number of email enquiries on how to phahla, here is typical guide on how one can go about doing so:
1. You will need a white (in the middle), yellow and blue candles (others right & left), Impepho, snuff and glass of water ( or an enamel cup / bowl). Place the items on the ground facing East.
2. Place your white candle on the right hand side, Impepho on the left (the amount doesn't matter).
3. With the glass of water on your hands, kneel facing east and offer the glass up to the East direction and say: "I show honour and respect to the spirits on my mother's side." (Mention those you know by names)
4. Turn to the west and say: "I show honour and respect to the spirits on my father's side." (Mention those you know by names)
5. Turn to the north and offer the cup up the same way and say: "I show honour and respect to the spirits which are known to me, but have forgotten their names.
6. Finish in the south the same way saying: "I show honour and respect to the GOOD, KIND, LOVING, CARING AND PEACEFUL spirits which are unknown to me.
By doing this you are also creating a crossroads, a point from which you can begin to access your Ancestral spirits world.
7. Put the glass in the middle - in-between Impepho and the candle.
Open snuff, take the snuff using your thumb and the middle finger...
Sprinkle it on the floor, and call upon all your ancestors you know by name. Saying - "Thokozani bo gogo nabomkhulu, nina bakwa" your dad’s clan praise and your mom's clan praise" and then call those you know by names. ( Note: if uzalelwe ekhaya komama you always acknowledge your maternal side first)
8. Then after, you start introducing yourself - this is……….,
child of so and so....
I come before you today because I would like to build a connection/relationship with you to show that you are not forgotten - and state the reasons why there hasn't been any contact or communication with them.
9. Tell them what you require and all your problems, and request them to accept and heed your requests or wishes.
10. Then thank them for looking after you and for protecting you even though you haven't being communicating with them. This is to show honour for their continuous/never ending love and protection etc...
11. Speak your heart out and all your dreams, goals and wishes.
12. Request that they open doors for whatever you wish to venture in, they must always walk before you and make things happen.
13. Ask for their love and light, wisdom, enlightenment and that they should visit/show themselves to you through dreams, omen and continue to guard and protect you.
14. Once you’re done talking to them, say a prayer. And leave the candles to burn out. ( you may also blow them out using your hand or by pinching them out) BUT
PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT EVERYTHING IS SITUATED FIRMLY IN SAFE PLACE, so
you don’t cause damage or fire.
15. To phahla....women wear a doek, skirt and a cloak if you dont have a cloak use your ancestral cloth the one you use to Phahla or those who does not have any use just a towel to cover your shoulders....take off shoes always!
